    Description

EXTREMELY RARE VINTAGE BACCARAT CRYSTAL MARENNES PATTERN -
CLARET OR WHITE WINE – SET OF 4
This is a set of four (4) Baccarat Crystal glasses designed for Claret, but also perfect for white wine.
They display the very difficult-to-find Marennes pattern, that is no longer available from Baccarat.
This Marennes pattern was made via the time-honored tradition of mouth-blown glass art objects, and was hand crafted in France. I have read that the Marennes pattern was made circa 1899 to 1900, and in 1910, was selected to decorate the official table of the French Prime Ministers in Paris, at Hotel de Matignon, which is the official residence of the Prime Minister of France.
One unique feature of this pattern is that the glass rim is exceptionally thin.
They can no longer be produced, as no person today has the special skills needed for the unique copper wheel engraving (read details below).
The flared bowls are engraved with inverted palmette within trefoil motifs, diaper pattern border, on faceted knopped stems and spreading star cut feet.
    They are approximately 5.5” high.
Each of these pieces of crystal is in perfect condition, with no chips or blemishes.
The pattern consists of an exquisitely detailed scroll cut bowl and the 6-sided stem has cut knobs at either end. The underside of the base has a star pattern, with “Baccarat” marked on the base (see photos).

    Background on Baccarat
It takes 15 years to master the techniques, tap the infinite possibilities for sculpting crystal. Baccarat boasts the highest number of award-winning Best Craftsmen in France, more than any other French luxury House.
Established in 1764 as a small glassware manufacturer in the eastern French hamlet of Baccarat, the factory excelled in its early years with a focus on glassware and mirrors, but slowed in its production with the onset of the French Revolution. Early in the nineteenth century, however, Baccarat developed its own lead crystal production process that soon grew to be respected across the country, if not across all of Europe. The exceptional quality of Baccarat glass works resulted in commissions from kings to presidents around the globe such that, by the midpoint of the century, Baccarat had gained international renown.
One of the factors that has contributed to the success of Baccarat crystal is that while they have developed signature styles now synonymous with the company’s tradition — such as Baccarat’s “Harcourt” line of glassware — their designers have also continued to innovate along with the trends and styles that have become popular over the years. This fluidity, combined with the expert craftsmanship behind each design, has resulted in Baccarat’s perennial popularity. From their smaller, more affordable figurines to their more substantial pieces, the legacy and allure of Baccarat crystal endures today.
Copper wheel engraving started at Baccarat in 1839, based on Bohême techniques. It is a free-hand process using a copper wheel that dig into the crystal. Of course, a steady hand is required to create straight or crossed lines, and to realize an intricate geometrical advanced pattern. The craftsman guides the crystal piece (which can weigh several pounds, or be as tiny as a drop) toward the machine to create the decor.
