The first parish church was built in 1732.  Father Gilbault was Pastor in 1788.  He raised Old Glory the first time in Indiana.  Father Rivet started the first Free School in the State in 1796.  The Liberty Bell in the steeple was brought from France in 1742.  Bishop Brute was the first Bishop in 1834.  Under the Cathedral rests the remains of four Bishop of Vincennes.  The present Cathedral was erected in 1826.
Vernon Kilns was the name used by Vernon Potteries, Ltd. The company, which started in 1912 in Vernon, California, was originally called Poxon China. In 1931 the company was sold and renamed Vernon Kilns. It made dinnerware and figurines until it went out of business in 1953. Collectors search for the brightly colored dinnerware and the pieces which are favorites among collectors.
