On the obverse, Helvetia can be seen holding a wreath. This is presumably for the winner of the festival. Helvetia is the classic female personification of Switzerland. The landscape behind her features a stunning level of detail. The date and festival location are inscribed on this side.
Reverse:
The face value of "50 Fr" (fifty Francs) is displayed on the reverse. The face value is surrounded by an ornate wreath. The lower portion shows the purity inscription along with a pair of crossed rifles.

Share in the Alpine Nation’s Annual Celebration of Marksmanship
Since the 1400s when it was referred to as the “Old Swiss Confederacy,” Switzerland has held annual festivals to celebrate and have people compete in marksmanship. The first festivals were held with crossbows, the weapon that William Tell famously used to shoot an apple off his son’s head. In the 1800s, the weapons changed – to rifles – but the festival did not. From 1842-1939, shooting thalers were issued to commemorate event. Modern thalers have been issued since 1984. This 2018 Switzerland twenty-five-g Silver Shooting Thaler Proof has joined the series.
THE LATEST IN THE SHOOTING THALER SERIES
-- This 2018 Silver Shooting Thaler Proof is the latest issue (as of 2018) in Switzerland’s long history of thalers. The current run began in 1984.
STUNNING HELVETICA DESIGN
– The obverse features a bare breasted Helvetica, the allegorical figure who represents Switzerland, standing against a backdrop of a Swiss landscape. She holds a rifle in her right hand and extends a laurel wreath, a symbol of honors bestowed upon the winners at the festival, with her left.
NINE ZERO FINE SILVER WITH PROOF FINISH
—Each of these 2018 Shooting Thaler Proofs was struck from twenty-five grams of 90% fine silver. The coins have a proof finish that is fitting of their exclusivity.
FESTIVAL TENDER
– The 2018 25-g Silver Shooting Thaler is technically redeemable for its face value – 50 francs – at the festival itself, but it is not legal tender.
A LIMITED MINTAGE
– Just 1,750 2018 25-g Silver Shooting Thaler Proofs were minted.
While the Swiss Shooting Thaler dates back nearly two hundred years, the history behind it goes even further back to the original shooting festivals. That provides the sort of connection with the past that few modern coins can match. The series has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among collectors who have a passion for marksmanship. Despite its popularity, its mintage numbers remain extremely low.
