Description
This is a very nice, fully original, lustrous uncirculated, silver,
"Batzen"
from the
"Canton"
of Basel in Switzerland. It was struck there in 1809 before Switzerland became a federal state.
The town of Basel was called
"Basilia"
in Latin, this name being documented from the year 374 AD. From 999 until the protestant reformation, Basel was ruled by Prince-Bishops, whose memory is preserved in the Crosier shown on the Basel coat of arms.
Weight: 2.62 Gram, 24 Millimeter, Billon or low-purity silver.

The Coin:
This one never circulated. Like many low-purity silver coins these are prone to lamination errors where the metals it is made from were poorly mixed. This piece has a number of them. The most significant is where part of the obverse has chipped away. None of this is considered damage, but a minting error. Fully original, it has toned some but remains fully lustrous and of course, it has not been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
